Responsable de una de cada 20 muertes en el mundo: el alcohol

El alcohol mata a unos tres millones de personas en el mundo por año, lo que representa una de cada 20 muertes, informó la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).

La OMS destaca en un informe que el consumo de alcohol mata más que el Sida, la tuberculosis y la violencia juntos.

Hay más de 200 enfermedades vinculadas al consumo de alcohol.

De los tres millones de muertes atribuidas al alcohol, 28% son por accidentes de tránsito, violencias, suicidios y otros actos violentos; 21% a problemas digestivos y 19% a enfermedades cardiovasculares. Las otras muertes se atribuyeron a enfermedades infecciosas, cánceres, enfermedades mentales y otros problemas de salud.

Alrededor de dos mil 300 millones de personas en el mundo beben alcohol, según la OMS. Más de la mitad de la población lo consume en el continente americano, en el europeo y en la región del Pacífico occidental.

El director general de la OMS, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus señaló “Demasiadas personas –sus familias y sus comunidades– sufren las consecuencias del uso nocivo del alcohol, ya sea por la violencia, los problemas de salud mental y las enfermedades como el cáncer y los accidentes cerebrovasculares. Es hora de actuar más para prevenir esta grave amenaza para el desarrollo de sociedades sanas»
